Best Things To Do in Cairns
Cairns is a tropical paradise in Northern Queensland with so much for nature lovers to explore. The one thing we were told by locals was not to go swimming at the beaches, or even lay on the beaches, because of crocodiles that could sneak up on you. We spent our first day at sea and our second day exploring the rain forest. At night we went to Gilligan's which is a multi-level nightclub where everyone goes out. Here are all the things not to miss in Cairns!
The Great Barrier Reef
When I went to Cairns in January of 2016, the Great Barrier Reef was still full of fish and vibrant colors. Even then though, coral bleaching was a serious concern and it's so sad to me that this incredible ecosystem is dying today.
The Daintree Rainforest
Before going to Australia, I heard about the things to look out for -- spiders in the toilet, snakes, crocodiles, etc. It wasn't until I went to Cairns that I saw the gigantic spiders that I was warned about. At one point I saw a huge lizard-looking thing dart across a path we were on, and my tour guide said it was a lace monitor (a huge lizard related to the Komodo dragon). Even though these creatures freaked me out, it was so cool to see them in The Daintree. The whole time I had my eyes peeled for a cassowary, but they're really rare and we didn't come across one.
On our boat ride through crocodile-infested waters, we heard story after story about deadly encounters with these huge creatures, all of which happened when people went in for a quick swim.
